Feeding is the most basic and important management problem in poultry feed production, as feed costs are the most expensive part of the business. As a result, one of the most important factors in efficient poultry production is feeding efficiency. They can be classified into six groups – water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins and depending on the percentage of these constituents, the poultry feed price is determined.
Many cereals, such as maize, rice, wheat, oat, and barley; and a few cereal byproducts, such as wheat bran or rice polish; and animal and vegetable protein sources, such as fish-meal, meat-meal, soybean-oil-meal, groundnut-cake, and so on, depending on availability. The entire ration is fortified with sufficient minerals and vitamins, either chemically or from substances which are rich in nutrients.
Generally, poultry feed is of three types –
Starting poultry feed: An all-mash ration for chicks up to 8 weeks of age.
Growing poultry feed: This is the food that should be fed to growing chickens between the ages of 8 and 20 weeks, or before laying begins.
Laying poultry feed: It is given to laying birds after 20 weeks or after when the laying commences.
Proteins – The majority of poultry products are made up of protein. The carcass of an 8-week-old broiler is more than 65 % protein by dry weight, and the egg content is around 50% protein. Protein content in broiler rations ranges from 22 to 24 %, while protein content in layers rations ranges from 16 to 17 percent.
Carbohydrates – Carbohydrates in the diet primarily serve to provide energy to the animal. Chickens only have enzymes that can hydrolyze starch which is why cereal grain and its by-products can give bulk ration.
Fats– Fats account for over 40% of the dry weight of an egg and about 17% of the dry weight of a broiler. Most feed ingredients for the young growing chicks should have essential fatty acid (Linoleic acid).
Minerals – phosphorus, calcium, sodium, iron, magnesium, iodine, chlorine, potassium, molybdenum, copper, manganese, zinc and selenium are the necessary minerals in feed.
Vitamins – commercial vitamin mixture or fish solubles, liver meal, distillers’ solubles, alfalfa meal, milk by-products can serve as sources.
